Sedation Dentistry

SEDATION DENTISTRY

IN LOGAN, UT

According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, approximately 36% of Americans experience dental nervousness, anxiety, or fear when faced with the prospect of visiting a dentist. If you fall into this category, you may consider suffering from a toothache better than sitting down in a dental examination chair, but receiving regular dental care is crucial.

You can develop dental anxieties or phobias that include the fear of needles, traumatic past dental experiences, difficulty sitting still for long periods, general aversion to medical procedures, or other factors. No matter your reason for being nervous about going to the dentist, however, sedation dentistry can help.

At the dental office of Dr. Douglas F. Smith, DDS, we make it a priority to give each of our patients a welcoming and comfortable dental experience. As part of our commitment, we offer sedation dentistry to turn the prospect of an intimidating and nerve-wracking dental appointment into a relaxing and calm experience for our patients.

HOW SEDATION CAN HELP WITH DENTIST APPOINTMENTS

Often referred to as “pain-free dentistry,” sedation dentistry focuses on patient comfort. It provides a more calming experience in the dental chair, free from the anxiety that might otherwise accompany the situation. This service is ideal for patients who may have significant fear, anxiety, or nervousness surrounding dental visits. Sedation is also common for patients undergoing multiple dental procedures at once or involved operations such as root canals, extractions, and other more complex procedures.

In most cases, a dental procedure doesn’t require full sedation. Instead, you’ll have the option of inhaling nitrous oxide (otherwise known as laughing gas) or a deeper sedation.

  • Nitrous oxide: Laughing gas will take the edge off your nervousness. We don’t charge extra fees for the use of nitrous oxide.

  • Deeper sedation: You’ll stay conscious and in control of your body processes and movements, but it calms the mind and removes anxiety.

SEDATION DENTISTRY FAQS

Most of the time, the answer is yes. Sedation treatments range from a mild laughing gas that wears off immediately after the procedure to more intense sedatives that keep you on the edge of consciousness. For extreme anxiety or phobias, we may use general anesthesia.

Although administering full sedation to children is challenging, nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is generally safe for children. We can often use nitrous oxide in cases where a child is experiencing significant stress over a dental procedure.

Administering the sedation varies by sedation type. We administer laughing gas via a breathing tube placed under the nose but administer deeper sedation through either an oral pill or IV.
